Writing the EB-1A Petition Letter: Experience and Suggestions from a DIY Petitioner
A DIY EB-1A petitioner shares how to draft the petition letter: an opening summary, a four-part structure, and how to argue extraordinary ability through citations, authorship, and peer review, with notes on recommendation letters, journal-ranking tables, citation data, and patents.
How to write a petition letter? It is advisable to begin the petition letter with a summary so that the reviewing officer can quickly understand who the applicant is. The following format may be used as a reference: Summary: My curriculum vitae is in [Exhibit 01]. I am a scientist in the field of xxx (broad professional category), particularly through my work relating to xxx (specific to one's own research area). I obtained my Ph.D. Degree from xxx in 20xx (Ph.D. Diploma in [Exhibit 02]). I am now a full-time researcher at xxx (offer letter in [Exhibit 03]). Letters of recommendation: please see [Exhibit 04-09]. I applied for a green card through DIY (for the complete EB-1A application process, see this article by another author on this website). My Petition Letter consists of four parts: I Am an Alien of Extraordinary Ability. I Continue to Work in My Field of Extraordinary Ability. Substantial Benefits Prospective for the United States. Conclusion. The first part is the most critical, namely arguing the applicant's extraordinary ability. Before arguing, I suggest completing three tasks first: First, divide one's research into 3-5 sub-directions, each basically requiring a recommendation letter, and each direction can correspond to one or several published articles, summarized in two sentences. Second, import articles that cite one's own articles into a reference management tool (such as EndNote) to facilitate classification of these articles (including book chapters). For example, if you find 10 articles that give lengthy positive evaluations of your articles, then focus on discussing these articles, and the first authors or corresponding authors of these 10 articles are potential recommenders. Third, prepare 4-6 recommendation letters. I will discuss how to obtain recommendation letters later. For science and engineering students engaged in research, this part needs to be argued from at least three points: articles, citations, and peer review, namely "Authorship of Scholarly Articles in Professional & Major Publication in My Field", "Original Contributions of Major Significance in My Field", "Serving as a Judge of the Work of Others in My Field." I myself have not published articles in the most top-tier professional journals, but I have more highlights in terms of citations by others, so I first argue citations and then articles. Some people think that I-140 is just boasting about how great one is. I personally do not think so. I think this is an argumentation process, requiring various concrete evidence to support one's arguments, rather than empty generalities. [add-post id=4991] Arguing Citations Original Contributions This part can be subdivided into two sub-parts: one is to list articles that cite one's own articles and the lengthy positive evaluations by recommenders of the applicant's work (divided into 3-5 sub-directions); the other is to emphasize that one's articles are widely cited, and that the articles citing one's articles are also good articles, giving the feeling that others achieved such results by standing on your shoulders. My experience is that the seven characters "lengthy positive evaluation" can be split into two: lengthiness is one aspect, and positive evaluation is another. One's own articles being extensively cited by review articles: If one's own articles, including text and/or figures, can be cited by a review, it shows that one's research is recognized by peers. It is even better if the review extensively cites your published articles! The person writing the review is often a rising star or even a top expert in the field. You can introduce how outstanding this person is in the petition letter, because one's work being cited by a top expert shows the importance of one's work. However, one should also appropriately avoid letting the top expert overshadow oneself, causing immigration officers to question your major contribution in this field. In addition, the top experts writing these reviews are also potential candidates for writing recommendation letters for you. In the petition letter, one can write as follows: "This study was heavily discussed in a recent review article published on an international, peer-reviewed journal xxxx in 20xx. Dr. xxx, the founder, president, and chief executive officer (CEO) of xxxxx discussed and cited my research work 'xxxxx [citing my article]' with one paragraph, two figures in my xxxx (journal name) paper." (The person who published the review used one paragraph to introduce my work and cited two figures from my article.) Being cited by general articles (Article/Communications): At this time, one needs to find positive evaluation words, such as overcome, easy method, high-performance, outstanding, superior, etc. The new strategy and overcome below can both be regarded as positive evaluations, and one's name is directly mentioned in the article. In the petition letter, one can write as follows: "Dr. xxx (the person who cited your paper), a professor of xxx, explicitly stated in xxxx (journal name) that 'a new strategy to overcome these problems is to use xxxxx. xxx et al (my name) fabricated xxxxx." And bold these words so that the reviewing officer can see them at a glance. Actually, more often, others' reviews mention the name of the corresponding author (often the advisor). How to write in this case? My suggestion is to replace the place where the corresponding author's name appears with [citing my paper], to avoid only the corresponding author's (often the advisor's) name appearing. In the petition letter, one can write as follows: "Dr. xxx (the person who cited your paper), a professor of xxx, explicitly stated in xxxx (journal name) that 'a new strategy to overcome these problems is to use xxxxx [citing my paper] fabricated xxxxx.'" One's own articles being cited by books: Books can be regarded as large reviews, and one's articles may be extensively cited; another situation is the appearance of positive evaluation words, and the writing method has been mentioned above, so no further elaboration. One can introduce the importance of the book and the importance of the publisher in the petition letter, all of which can be found on the official website. For example, data from one of my articles was used as a standard in "Handbook of Polymers, Second Edition". In the petition letter, one can write as follows: The volume resistivity and young's modulus are selected as data for xxxx in Handbook of Polymer, Second Edition, published in 2016 by ChemTec Publishing. Handbook of Polymers, Second Edition, presents "normalized, up-to-date polymer data in a consistent and easily referenceable layout." This new edition (second edition) represents "an update of the available data, including new values for many commercially available products, verification of existing data, and removal of older data where it is no longer useful." Chemtec Publishing contributes to "the progress and the application of polymers, plastics, and rubber by delivering the most comprehensive information that fosters advancement in research and application." Patent achievements: If a patent is merely granted, or has been transferred to a company but not yet industrialized, it is not recommended to mention it in the petition letter, because in these two cases the patent has not yet demonstrated value and is easily questioned. If a patent has been industrialized, one needs to obtain a recommendation letter from the company to emphasize the patent's important contribution to the company. Argumentation process: During the argumentation process, one can include the recommender's words: "Dr. XXX, a professor of xxx (school name), gives his independent evaluation of my work: 'There are two key problems in xxx (explaining problems in the research field). Dr. XXX (applicant's name) has elucidated a novel method to solve these issues.' 'Such material designed by Dr. XXX (applicant's name) displayed higher xxx excellent xxx and superior xxx.'" Next, emphasize that one's articles are widely cited, and that the articles citing one's articles are also excellent articles. I myself elaborate from several aspects: My research has resulted in xxx publications including xxx English research articles and xxx Chinese research articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. (How many articles one has published). These English publications have been cited at least xxx times by scientists from xxx institutions in 37 countries and territories including: USA, Canada, UK, Austria, France, Croatia, Finland, Denmark, Turkey, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, mainland China, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Thailand, India, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, Egypt, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. [exhibit a23]. Citations indicate the wide and lasting impact of my work on my field. (How many times one's articles have been cited, and from how many countries and institutions the citations come. I was quite meticulous about this, organizing all citations into Excel so that the authors' nationalities and institutions are clear at a glance.) Furthermore, these publications are frequently cited by influential journals around the world including xxx (#1 top ranked chemistry journal), xxx (#2 top ranked materials science journal), xxx (#3 top ranked in chemistry field) and xxx (#1 top ranked in analytical chemistry field). (One's articles being cited by top professional journals) The average citation rate of my publications is far beyond my peers in the field of xxx. Some of them are better than or nearly close to the top 0.5% citation rate in the field. (Emphasizing that the average citation count of one's articles is also good in the field) My novel findings have been heavily discussed and highlighted by field experts in many review papers and used as a scientific evidence to verify other scientists' experimental observation. (Emphasizing that one's articles are cited by reviews and one's experimental methods are adopted) Most importantly, my research has been used as the basis of important work of other scientists. My work on volume resistivity and young's modulus of xxx have been used as the basic data for the book of handbook of polymers, second edition. (Emphasizing that one's articles are used as standards by books) Finally, summarize "original contributions of major significance in my field", mainly letting the recommenders speak to one's excellence: In summary, I have made extraordinary progress in the field, impacting scientists well beyond their circles of colleagues. Below are the recommender's words: "Dr. XXX's multidisciplinary expertise has enabled him to achieve international recognition and has established him as an outstanding scientist at the top of the fields of his specialty." "Dr. XXX is an outstanding researcher with extraordinary ability and his original contributions have strongly impacted the field of printed and flexible electronics." "Dr. XXX possesses a strong and multidisciplinary academic background." This completes the writing on citations (original contributions of major significance in my field). Arguing Articles Authorship, namely "authorship of scholarly articles in professional & major publication in my field", can be divided into 3 sub-directions. One's articles published in top journals in the industry: My articles are published in the leading scientific journals. Use a table to show that these journals are top journals in the industry. Table 1. The ranking of the journals in which I have published my English articles as compared to a total of 8,837 leading scientific journals indexed by ISI web of science. Journal Title 5-Year IF Eigenfactor Score Eigenfactor Ranking Notes ACS Applied M&I 7.823 0.21648 Top 0.42% #5 in xxx field Nanoscale 7.668 0.18113 Top 0.59% #8 in xxx field Note: A journal may be classified into different research fields; usually choose the field with the highest ranking to display, such as the above two journals ranking 5th and 8th in materials science. The importance of the journal itself can usually be found on the journal's official website, such as: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces focuses on "how newly-discovered materials and interfacial processes can be developed and used for specific applications." Nanoscale is "a high impact peer reviewed journal publishing experimental and theoretical work across the breadth of nanoscience and nanotechnology". High-quality citation counts of one's articles: My publications have made a significant impact in my field. Use a table to show one's citation counts (Table 2), and show that citation counts increase year by year (the citation number is expected to continue increasing substantially and steadily in the future, figure 1). Also use a table to show that citations to one's articles also come from top journals. Table 2. The citation from Google Scholar Citation Analytics Tool Number of Articles Total Citation Average Citation Per Article h-index Google Scholar 11 247 22.5 8 Figure 1. Citation distribution by year (Analysis by Google Scholar) Worldwide impact of one's articles: My publications have broad impacts and were cited worldwide. Oil lamp map (figure 2). Many people wonder whether to use an oil lamp map. My suggestion is that if the oil lamp map looks good, it can definitely be used. My articles have been cited by scholars in South Africa and Brazil, making the citation footprint cover six continents. The previous part lists the country distribution, while the oil lamp map nicely shows the institutional distribution. Figure 2. The geographic locations for publications that have cited my work. (Analysis by Google Scholar) If a single article of one's own has a high citation count, it can also be compared with the average in the research field: As shown in table 3, the average citations to two of my articles published in 2014 and 2015 are better than or nearly close to the top 1% citation rate in the field of materials sciences, which demonstrates that my publication and citation record is superior to my peers. Table 3. Comparisons of the Average Citation Rates in My Field Year of publication 2014 2015 Citations to my articles (From Google Scholar) 97 37 1% Percentile citation in the field of Materials Sciences 68 40 10% Percentile citation in the field of Materials Sciences 20 12 Average citations in the field of Materials Sciences 8.41 5.02 Finally, summarize the articles (Authorship of Scholarly Articles in Professional & Major Publication in My Field): "Overall, my publication record is excellent and has received international recognition. Clearly, only a researcher with proven exceptional qualifications and discoveries will be consistently recognized by these numerous publications. Therefore, my publication record has placed me at very top of my field." Arguing Peer Review Judge of the Work of Others Finally, argue peer review, namely Serving as a judge of the work of others in my field, in three steps: list one's review count, number of journals reviewed for, and journal names; the evaluation of recommenders (editor-in-chief, associate editor, or editor of the journal); introduce that the reviewed journals are top journals. Due to my widespread and lasting influence on the research community in the field of xxx. I have been directly invited to serve as a peer reviewer by numerous well-respected international scientific journals. I have been invited to review xxx manuscripts for xxx journals, including xxx, xxx and xxx. Dr. XXX stated in his independent expert testimony, "The reviewers are instrumental to ensure the quality and integrity of the journal. And therefore their scientific expertise is of a paramount consideration." "Dr. XXX has been appointed as one of our regular reviewers, solely for his international recognition and outstanding contributions in the area of xxx, specifically the research of xxx." (This is a recommendation letter given by a journal editor as a recommender) These are distinguished international journals in the various subfields related to my expertise in materials science and engineering. For example, with an impact factor of 8.296, Small provides "the very best forum for experimental and theoretical studies of fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research at these dimensions." Journal of Materials Chemistry C is a "high impact applications, properties & synthesis of exciting new materials for optical, magnetic & electronic devices." Thus, these journals have high standards for publication and require peer-reviewers with similarly high expertise and credentials to judge the scientific originality, techniques, and merits of submitted manuscripts to ensure conformity to strict publication standards. (Select a few typical reviewed journals for introduction) My influence in my field is clearly demonstrated by these repeated and ongoing requests for my professional services, which illustrate the high regard for my expertise and my sustained international acclaim and recognition. Having completed the argument for "I Am an Alien of Extraordinary Ability", the remaining three parts are very simple. Among them, "I Continue to Work in My Field of Extraordinary Ability" and "Substantial Benefits Prospective for the United States" follow the pattern of expressing one's determination plus recommender recommendations, and the Conclusion is simply expressing one's wish for the I-140 to be approved smoothly, which will not be elaborated here. Author introduction: This article was submitted by Eric Huang. The author is a post-80s generation, a research dog, who loves thinking and cooking.
It is recommended to begin the petition letter with a summary so that the reviewing officer knows who the petitioner is. An example is as follows:
Summary: My curriculum vitae is in [ Exhibit 01 ]. I am a scientist in the field of xxx (broad professional category), particularly through my work relating to xxx (specific to my research area). I obtained my Ph.D. degree from xxx in 20xx (Ph.D. Diploma in [ Exhibit 02 ]). I am now a full-time researcher at xxx (offer letter in [ Exhibit 03 ]). Letters of recommendation: please see [ Exhibit 04-09 ].
I applied for the green card through a DIY approach (for the complete EB-1A application process, please refer to this article by another author on this site). My petition letter consists of four parts:
- I Am an Alien of Extraordinary Ability.
- I Continue to Work in My Field of Extraordinary Ability.
- Substantial Benefits Prospective for the United States.
- Conclusion.
The most important part is the first one, which argues for the petitioner's extraordinary ability. Before making the argument, I suggest doing three things first:
- Divide your research into 3 to 5 sub-directions, and basically each direction requires a recommendation letter. Each direction can correspond to one or several of your published articles, summarized in two sentences.
- Import articles that cite your work into a reference management tool such as EndNote to facilitate classification of these articles (including book chapters). For example, if you find 10 articles that give substantial positive evaluation of your work, focus on discussing these articles, and the first authors or corresponding authors of these 10 articles are potential recommenders.
- You need 4 to 6 recommendation letters. I will discuss how to request recommendation letters later.
For science and engineering students engaged in research, this section needs to be discussed from at least three points: articles, citations, and peer review, namely "Authorship of Scholarly Articles in Professional & Major Publication in My Field," "Original Contributions of Major Significance in My Field," and "Serving as a Judge of the Work of Others in My Field."
I myself have not published in the top journals of my field, but I have more highlights in terms of citations by others, so I first argue citations and then discuss articles. Some people think that I-140 is about boasting about how great you are, but I personally do not see it that way. I believe it is an argumentation process that requires providing various solid materials to support your points, rather than empty generalities.
[add-post id=4991]
Arguing Citations and Original Contributions
This part can be divided into two sub-parts: first, list articles that cite your work and the substantial positive evaluations of your work by recommenders (organized into 3 to 5 sub-directions); second, emphasize that your articles are widely cited and that the articles citing your work are themselves good articles, giving the impression that others achieved these results by standing on your shoulders. In my experience, the phrase "substantial positive evaluation" can be split into two aspects: "substantial" is one aspect, and "positive evaluation" is the other.
Your Articles Being Substantially Cited in Review Articles
If your articles (including text and/or figures) are cited in a review, it shows that your research is recognized by peers. It is even better if the review contains substantial citations of your published articles! The authors of reviews are often rising stars or even leading experts in the field. You can describe in the petition letter how accomplished this person is, because having your work cited by an expert demonstrates the importance of your work. However, be careful not to let the expert overshadow you, which could lead immigration officers to question your major contribution in this field. In addition, these review authors are also potential candidates for writing recommendation letters for you.
In the petition letter, one can write: "This study was heavily discussed in a recent review article published on an international, peer-reviewed journal xxxx in 20xx. Dr. xxx, the founder, president, and chief executive officer (CEO) of xxxxx discussed and cited my research work 'xxxxx [citing my article]' with one paragraph, two figures in my xxxx (journal name) paper." (The person who published the review used one paragraph to introduce my work and cited two figures from my article.)
Being Cited by General Articles (Article/Communications)
At this point, one needs to look for positive evaluative words, such as overcome, easy method, high-performance, outstanding, superior, etc. The new strategy and overcome mentioned below can both be regarded as positive evaluations, and they directly mention one's name in the article.
In the petition letter, one can write: "Dr. xxx (the person who cited your paper), a professor of xxx, explicitly stated in xxxx (journal name) that 'a new strategy to overcome these problems is to use xxxxx. xxx et al (my name) fabricated xxxxx.'" And bold these words so that the reviewer can see them at a glance.
In fact, more often than not, others' reviews mention the corresponding author's name (often the advisor). How should you write in this case? My suggestion is to replace the place where the corresponding author's name appears with [citing my paper], to avoid only the corresponding author's name (often the advisor) appearing.
In the petition letter, one can write: "Dr. xxx (the person who cited your paper), a professor of xxx, explicitly stated in xxxx (journal name) that 'a new strategy to overcome these problems is to use xxxxx [citing my paper] fabricated xxxxx.'"
Your Articles Being Cited in Books
Books can be regarded as large reviews, and one's articles may be cited in large sections; another situation is the appearance of positive evaluative words, and the writing method has been mentioned above and will not be repeated. One can introduce the importance of the book and the importance of the publisher in the petition letter, all of which can be found on the official website. For example, data from one of my articles was used as a standard in the "Handbook of Polymers, Second Edition," and I wrote the following in my petition letter:
The volume resistivity and young's modulus are selected as data for xxxx in Handbook of Polymer, Second Edition, published in 2016 by ChemTec Publishing. Handbook of Polymers, Second Edition, presents "normalized, up-to-date polymer data in a consistent and easily referenceable layout." This new edition (second edition) represents "an update of the available data, including new values for many commercially available products, verification of existing data, and removal of older data where it is no longer useful." Chemtec Publishing contributes to "the progress and the application of polymers, plastics, and rubber by delivering the most comprehensive information that fosters advancement in research and application."
Patent Achievements
If a patent has merely been granted, or has been transferred to a company but not yet commercialized, it is not recommended to mention it in the petition letter, because in both cases the patent has not yet demonstrated value and is easily questioned. If the patent has been commercialized, you need to obtain recommendation letters from relevant company personnel to emphasize the patent's significant contribution to the company.
The Argumentation Process
During the discussion, one can include the recommender's words: "Dr. XXX, a professor of xxx (school name), gives his independent evaluation of my work: 'There are two key problems in xxx (explain the problems in the research field). Dr. XXX (applicant's name) has elucidated a novel method to solve these issues.' 'Such material designed by Dr. XXX (applicant's name) displayed higher xxx excellent xxx and superior xxx.'"
Next, I will emphasize that my articles have been widely cited, and that the articles citing them are also of high quality. I will elaborate from the following aspects:
My research has resulted in xxx publications, including xxx English research articles and xxx Chinese research articles in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. (How many articles I have published.) These English publications have been cited at least xxx times by scientists from xxx institutions in 37 countries and territories, including: USA, Canada, UK, Austria, France, Croatia, Finland, Denmark, Turkey, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Poland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, mainland China, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Thailand, India, Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, Egypt, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. [exhibit a23]. The citations indicate the wide and lasting impact of my work on my field. (How many times my articles have been cited, and from how many countries and institutions. I was quite meticulous about this: I compiled all citations into an Excel spreadsheet, so the authors' nationalities and institutions are clear at a glance.) Furthermore, these publications are frequently cited by influential journals around the world, including xxx (#1 top ranked chemistry journal), xxx (#2 top ranked materials science journal), xxx (#3 top ranked in chemistry field) and xxx (#1 top ranked in analytical chemistry field). (My articles are cited by top professional journals.) The average citation rate of my publications is far beyond my peers in the field of xxx. Some of them are better than or nearly close to the top 0.5% citation rate in the field. (Emphasizing that my articles' average citation count is also good in the field.) My novel findings have been heavily discussed and highlighted by field experts in many review papers and used as scientific evidence to verify other scientists' experimental observations. (Emphasizing that my articles are cited in review papers and my experimental methods are adopted.) Most importantly, my research has been used as the basis of important work of other scientists. My work on volume resistivity and Young's modulus of xxx has been used as the basic data for the book Handbook of Polymers, Second Edition. (Emphasizing that my articles are used as standards in books.)
Finally, I summarize the 'original contributions of major significance in my field,' mainly by letting recommenders speak to my excellence: In summary, I have made extraordinary progress in the field, impacting scientists well beyond their circles of colleagues. Below are the recommenders' words:
- 'Dr. XXX's multidisciplinary expertise has enabled him to achieve international recognition and has established him as an outstanding scientist at the top of the fields of his specialty.'
- 'Dr. XXX is an outstanding researcher with extraordinary ability and his original contributions have strongly impacted the field of printed and flexible electronics.'
- 'Dr. XXX possesses a strong and multidisciplinary academic background.'
This completes the writing on citations (original contributions of major significance in my field).
Demonstrating Authorship
That is, "authorship of scholarly articles in professional & major publication in my field," and this item can be further divided into 3 sub-directions.
My articles are published in top journals in the field
My articles are published in leading scientific journals. A table can be used to show that these journals are top-tier in the field.
Table 1. The ranking of the journals in which I have published my English articles as compared to a total of 8,837 leading scientific journals indexed by ISI Web of Science.
| Journal Title | 5-Year IF | Eigenfactor Score | Eigenfactor Ranking | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACS Applied M&I | 7.823 | 0.21648 | Top 0.42% | #5 in xxx field |
| Nanoscale | 7.668 | 0.18113 | Top 0.59% | #8 in xxx field |
Note: A journal may be classified into different research fields; usually, the field with the highest ranking is chosen for display, such as the above two journals ranking 5th and 8th in materials science. The importance of a journal can usually be found on its official website, for example:
- ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces focuses on 'how newly-discovered materials and interfacial processes can be developed and used for specific applications.'
- Nanoscale is 'a high impact peer reviewed journal publishing experimental and theoretical work across the breadth of nanoscience and nanotechnology.'
High-quality citation counts of my articles
My publications have made a significant impact in my field. Use a table to show my citation counts (Table 2) and to show that citations increase year by year (the citation number is expected to continue increasing substantially and steadily in the future, Figure 1). Also use a table to show that citations to my articles come from top journals as well.
Table 2. The citation from Google Scholar
| Citation Analytics Tool | Number of Articles | Total Citation | Average Citation Per Article | h-index |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Scholar | 11 | 247 | 22.5 | 8 |
Figure 1. Citation distribution by year (Analysis by Google Scholar)
Worldwide impact of my articles
My publications have broad impact and have been cited worldwide (oil lamp map, Figure 2). Many people wonder whether to use an oil lamp map; my advice is that if the map is well-made, it can certainly be used. My articles have been cited by scholars in South Africa and Brazil, extending the citation footprint across six continents. The previous section lists country distribution, while the oil lamp map effectively shows institutional distribution.
Figure 2. The geographic locations for publications that have cited my work. (Analysis by Google Scholar)
If a single article has a high citation count, it can also be compared with the average in the research field: As shown in table 3, the average citations to two of my articles published in 2014 and 2015 are better than or nearly close to the top 1% citation rate in the field of materials sciences, which demonstrates that my publication and citation record is superior to my peers.
Table 3. Comparisons of the Average Citation Rates in My Field
| Year of publication | 2014 | 2015 |
|---|---|---|
| Citations to my articles (From Google Scholar) | 97 | 37 |
| 1% Percentile citation in the field of Materials Sciences | 68 | 40 |
| 10% Percentile citation in the field of Materials Sciences | 20 | 12 |
| Average citations in the field of Materials Sciences | 8.41 | 5.02 |
Finally, summarize the authorship of scholarly articles in professional & major publications in my field: “Overall, my publication record is excellent and has received international recognition. Clearly, only a researcher with proven exceptional qualifications and discoveries will be consistently recognized by these numerous publications. Therefore, my publication record has placed me at very top of my field.”
Argument for Serving as a Judge of the Work of Others
Finally, argue for serving as a judge of the work of others in my field, in three steps:
- List the number of reviews, the number of journals reviewed for, and the names of the journals.
- Evaluations from recommenders (the journal's editor-in-chief, associate editor, or editor).
- Introduce that the reviewed journals are top-tier journals.
Due to my widespread and lasting influence on the research community in the field of xxx, I have been directly invited to serve as a peer reviewer by numerous well-respected international scientific journals. I have been invited to review xxx manuscripts for xxx journals, including xxx, xxx and xxx. Dr. XXX stated in his independent expert testimony, “The reviewers are instrumental to ensure the quality and integrity of the journal. And therefore their scientific expertise is of a paramount consideration.” “Dr. XXX has been appointed as one of our regular reviewers, solely for his international recognition and outstanding contributions in the area of xxx, specifically the research of xxx.” (This is a recommendation letter from a journal editor as a recommender.) These are distinguished international journals in the various subfields related to my expertise in materials science and engineering. For example, with an impact factor of 8.296, Small provides “the very best forum for experimental and theoretical studies of fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research at these dimensions.” Journal of Materials Chemistry C is a “high impact applications, properties & synthesis of exciting new materials for optical, magnetic & electronic devices.” Thus, these journals have high standards for publication and require peer-reviewers with similarly high expertise and credentials to judge the scientific originality, techniques, and merits of submitted manuscripts to ensure conformity to strict publication standards. (Select a few typical journals to introduce.) My influence in my field is clearly demonstrated by these repeated and ongoing requests for my professional services, which illustrate the high regard for my expertise and my sustained international acclaim and recognition.
After completing the argument for “I Am an Alien of Extraordinary Ability,” the remaining three parts are very simple. Among them, “I Continue to Work in My Field of Extraordinary Ability” and “Substantial Benefits Prospective for the United States” follow the pattern of self-declaration plus recommender recommendations, and the conclusion is a simple expression of hope that the I-140 can be approved smoothly, which will not be elaborated here.
