Trump Says He Will Sign Executive Order to Temporarily Suspend Immigration
In April 2020, Trump tweeted that he would sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States, citing the pandemic and protecting American jobs. This article records the statement, the author's views on visa backlogs and likely litigation, and divisions within the Chinese community over HR 1044.

On Monday evening, Trump tweeted:
In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!
Citing the attack from the invisible enemy (the pandemic) and the need to protect American citizens' jobs, he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend (legal) immigration.
It is ironic that just this afternoon someone asked me: "Hello teacher, it's already the 23rd, and the visa bulletin hasn't come out yet. During the pandemic months in the U.S., will there be no cutoff dates?"
A few months ago, because of the discussion on HR 1044, many people who had not yet obtained status came to verbally abuse me. Tonight will probably be a long, long night.
P.S. Those whose priority dates are approaching need not worry too much. Once an executive order is issued, it will most likely be challenged in court and halted immediately. By the time the litigation is over, you will probably already have your green card, and the United States will already have its 46th president. That said, the deterioration of the immigration situation over Trump's four years in office has been plain for all to see. A few months ago, when I discussed HR 1044, I realized that many Chinese who have already secured their status do not want more Chinese immigrants to come (for fear of competition for jobs and resources?). But if you have not yet obtained status and still support Trump, I can only say you have gotten what you wished for. If Trump is elected again this year, the immigration situation can be expected to keep deteriorating.
