What to Do If Your I-94 Record Is Not Found Online After Entering the U.S. on a B Visa
A reader entered the United States on a B visa on June 6, 2022; the passport bears only an admission stamp with no stated date of stay, and no I-94 record for this entry can be found on the CBP website. This article relays CBP's official guidance: first check the name, passport number, nationality, and how the middle name was entered; if the record still cannot be found, contact CBP through the Traveler Communications Center, which aims to respond within 72 hours; it also explains the different circumstances of I-94 records for asylum applicants and for those who apply for an extension of stay or change of status in the United States.
A reader asks: "I entered on a B visa on June 6, 2022. My passport was only stamped with an admission stamp, and the officer did not write an expiration date for my stay. As of today (more than 1 month later), when I check the latest I-94 record on the I94 website, I cannot find any information about this entry. Is something wrong?"
CBP has an official answer to this, titled "What to do if your I-94 is 'Not Found' online," summarized and translated below.
###
If the CBP website returns "Not Found" when you search for your I-94, first check whether the information you entered is correct. Do not use hyphens or titles such as Mr/Mrs. Please check the following:
- Do the first name and last name you entered match those in your passport?
- Does the "Document Number" field match your passport number?
- Is your nationality entered correctly—the country that issued your passport, not the country where you currently reside?
- If you entered a "middle name," try entering only the first name, or enter "first name + space + middle name" in the "first name" field to see if the record can be found.
If you have tried all the methods above and still cannot find your I-94 record, you can contact CBP's Traveler Communications Center (TCC) by clicking here, and a response is generally expected within 72 hours. (Note: After reviewing this, for such cases it is suggested to select Topic: I-94/Traveler Compliance and Applicable Issue: I-94 Correction(s)/Travel History, and then explain the situation in the "Description" field.)
Asylum applicants are usually given a handwritten or stamped date upon entry and may not have an online I-94 record.
For those who file for an extension or change of status within the United States, USCIS will include the new I-94 record on the I-797 approval notice, and this information is not updated on the CBP website. (Note: We have explained this issue in a previous article: {https://gonglue.us/66899})
