Green Card Renewal Applications Now Receive Automatic 24-Month Extension
This article explains that since September 26, 2022, applicants who timely and properly file Form I-90 to renew their green cards receive an automatic 24-month extension, and describes how to use the I-797 receipt and expired green card to prove permanent resident status, as well as how to schedule an ADIT stamp if the expired green card is lost.
A reader asked in a Telegram group: I applied to renew my 10-year green card, received the receipt but not the approval yet—can I travel abroad now?
Starting from 2022/09/26, as long as you timely and correctly file Form I-90 to renew your green card, USCIS will automatically grant you a 24-month extension upon receipt, and this will be noted on your I-797 receipt. During these 24 months, this I-797 receipt together with your expired green card can be used to prove your permanent resident status.

If the expired green card has been lost, the applicant may schedule an appointment at a USCIS field office, where a temporary ADIT (Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications) stamp can be placed in the passport. This stamp functions like a green card, and using it together with the I-797 receipt can prove permanent resident status.
