2 min readAdapted by TOP EASIER

USCIS announced that starting September 10, 2024, for lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90 to renew their green cards, the validity period of their green cards is automatically extended to 36 months, up from 24 months. The revised receipt notice, together with the expired green card, can serve as evidence of continued status and work authorization; if the green card is no longer held, individuals may contact the contact center to schedule an in-person office interview and may receive an ADIT stamp.

Effective September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) automatically extends the validity of the Permanent Resident Card (also known as a “Green Card”) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.

This extension applies to lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90 to renew a Green Card that is expiring or has expired. Previously, the receipt notice for Form I-90 provided a 24-month extension of the Green Card’s validity.

USCIS has updated the content of Form I-90 receipt notices to extend the Green Card’s validity by 36 months from the expiration date shown on the front of the current Green Card for individuals who newly file Form I-90 renewal applications. Starting September 10, USCIS began printing revised receipt notices for applicants with pending Form I-90.

These receipt notices can be used together with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status and work authorization. This extension is expected to help applicants experiencing longer processing times, as it provides proof of lawful permanent resident status while they wait for a new Green Card.

If you no longer have your Green Card but need proof of lawful permanent resident status while waiting for a replacement, you may contact the USCIS Contact Center to schedule an interview at a USCIS field office. After you file Form I-90, we may issue you an ADIT (Alien Documentation, Identification and Telecommunication) stamp.
