Applying for a Day 1 CPT Scholarship at Westcliff University: One Student's Experience with Timing and Materials
Based on a submission by a student surnamed Lin and interview content, this article describes how the author chose Westcliff University's MSEM program after not being selected in the H1B lottery during OPT, and shares experience applying for the school's scholarship: applications must be filed three to four months in advance, require extensive materials, and are easy to miss the window, along with tips on essays, recommendation letters, and explaining financial hardship.

First, a brief background: I graduated from a domestic 985 university with a bachelor's degree in computer science, pursued a master's degree at a Top 30 university in the U.S., and currently live in San Diego. During the three years of OPT after graduation, I did not win the H1B lottery, so four months before my OPT expired, I started researching Day 1 CPT programs. In the end, due to the location and relatively higher scholarship, I chose the MSEM program at Westcliff University.
Special reminder: Based on my experience and Teacher Wildfire's explanation, the scholarship application at Westcliff University is not overly competitive, but Westcliff has a strict rule that applications must be submitted 3-4 months before the window opens, and more materials are required, to have a chance of successfully obtaining a scholarship. Therefore, many students easily miss the application window.
Below I will share my application experience with everyone on how to apply for the Westcliff scholarship:
1. Scholarship Application Overview
In the U.S., most universities offer various scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. For example, Westcliff University offers multiple types of scholarships that students can apply for based on their situation. Note that although some schools restrict students to accepting only one scholarship, this does not prevent you from applying for multiple scholarship programs simultaneously. It is recommended to apply broadly and, after all results are out, choose the one most beneficial to you to maximize returns.
2. Key Points for Preparing Application Materials
The key to applying for a scholarship lies in preparing sufficient application materials, the most important of which is the application essay. This essay serves as your self-introduction letter, through which the review committee learns about your academic performance and future plans.
Essay Writing Tips:
- Highlight academic strength: First, clearly show your GPA and explain your excellent performance in a high-intensity discipline like computer science. You can mention several challenging courses to highlight your professional ability.
- Show research and learning experience: In the essay, focus on describing research projects you have participated in, papers you have published, or academic honors you have received; these can effectively prove your professional ability and research level.
- Show extracurricular activities and work experience: In addition to academic performance, the school also values overall qualities. Mention your club activities, volunteer service, or internship experience to show your leadership and teamwork spirit.
- Plan for future development: Briefly talk about your study plan and career goals. Especially for students who need to use Day 1 CPT, explain your long-term plan and plan to work in the United States, which will make the review committee more confident in supporting your application.
3. The Importance of Recommendation Letters
Although some scholarship programs do not require recommendation letters, it is strongly recommended to prepare 2-3 letters from professors or work supervisors. Especially for applicants to management programs, if the recommendation letters come from your research advisor or technical supervisor, it will greatly enhance your competitiveness. Endorsement from authoritative figures can make review committee members more trusting of your abilities and potential.
4. Explanation of Financial Hardship
If you are indeed facing financial difficulties, it is advisable to mention them appropriately in your application essay. This is not about playing the victim, but about giving the review committee a more comprehensive understanding of your financial situation. For students using Day 1 CPT, explaining why you chose the program and your financial pressure may increase your chances of receiving a scholarship.
5. Application Summary
Overall, scholarship applications depend not only on academic grades but also on a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's overall abilities. Academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and a clear future plan are all factors that cannot be ignored in the review process. If, like me, you need to maintain status through Day 1 CPT, be sure to prepare and submit your application early. Especially for Westcliff University, the school has relatively strict timelines for scholarship applications, but the amounts are also relatively higher. Applying 3-4 months in advance is a necessary condition and a key step to ensure success.
