USCIS Changes I-693 Validity: Forms Signed on or After Nov. 1, 2023 No Longer Time-Limited

2 min readAdapted by TOP EASIER

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that a properly completed Form I-693 signed by a civil surgeon on or after Nov. 1, 2023, is no longer subject to a validity period; forms signed before that date remain valid for two years after signature, or three years for Operation Allies Welcome arrivals. Officials may still require a new medical exam if they believe health conditions have changed or the form no longer reflects the person's current status.

On April 4, 2024, USCIS announced that immigration medical exams completed after November 1, 2023, will be valid permanently, with no time limit. However, if a USCIS officer has reason to believe that the applicant's health has changed since the physician signed, or that the form no longer reflects the applicant's current health, the officer still has the authority to require a new medical exam.

For medical exams completed before November 1, 2023, the old policy still applies: the form is valid for two years from the date the physician signs it.

###

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that, effective November 1, 2023, as long as Form I-693 is properly completed and signed by a designated civil surgeon, its validity will not be subject to any time limit, and it can be used to show that the applicant is not inadmissible on public health grounds.

After consulting with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USCIS has decided that, based on advances in the public health electronic notification system, effective November 1, 2023, as long as Form I-693 is properly completed and signed by a civil surgeon, its evidentiary validity will no longer be subject to time limits. However, USCIS officers still have the authority to request additional evidence or require a new Form I-693. If an officer has reason to believe that the applicant's health has changed after the physician's signature, or that the submitted Form I-693 cannot accurately reflect the applicant's current health status and may indicate a public health-related ground of inadmissibility, the officer may make such a request.

If the applicant's immigration medical exam was completed before November 1, 2023, the prior policy still applies. Before November 1, 2023, civil surgeons were not required to report information electronically to the CDC. USCIS, after consulting with the CDC, decided that for Form I-693 signed by a physician before November 1, 2023, the evidentiary effect remains valid for two years from the date of signature. This rule does not apply to parolees under Operation Allies Welcome, whose Form I-693 is valid for three years from the date of the physician's signature, an exception established by USCIS in consultation with the CDC.
