Why the I-94 Date on the CBP Website Does Not Update After an Extension Is Approved: Clarifying the Roles of CBP and USCIS
The article explains that when an extension application is approved, USCIS provides a new I-94 date at the bottom left of the I-797 notice, while the I-94 record on the CBP website does not update accordingly, which is normal. It distinguishes the roles of CBP and USCIS and notes that arrivals should check their I-94 promptly and that a second extension should rely on the new USCIS I-94 record.
Recently, several readers have asked this question, so this article is written to answer it uniformly: if an extension application is approved, USCIS will provide a new I-94, but the I-94 date on the CBP website will not be updated. This is normal.
CBP vs. USCIS
The so-called “I-94 website” refers to https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov, an entry and exit record system maintained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP). Since 2013, paper I-94 records are no longer issued when entering by air or sea; CBP officers register your I-94 information in this system upon entry. It is recommended to log in and check within a few days after entry; if you find an error (for example, B1/B2 status was given only a very short period, or the date does not match the information on your passport visa page), you should contact the CBP at the airport of entry or the Deferred Inspection Office to correct it, see {https://gonglue.us/8598}.
When applying for an extension, you must provide your I-94 record, which can be printed directly from the above website; for detailed steps, see {https://gonglue.us/15029}.
CBP is only responsible for entry and exit matters. If you are already in the United States and want to extend or change status, you should submit the application to USCIS, not to CBP. USCIS and CBP are two separate agencies; whether USCIS approves or denies your application, it will not affect the I-94 given to you by CBP. If your application is approved, the I-797 notice from USCIS will show a new I-94 date in the lower left corner, while the I-94 record on the CBP website will not be updated—this is normal!

If your first extension has been approved and you later apply for a second or even third extension, you should submit the new I-94 record issued to you by USCIS, not the I-94 record printed from the CBP website that was given to you by the CBP officer upon your initial entry.
